Symptoms Of Recurring Endometrial Cancer

Endometrial cancer is a form of uterine cancer demonstrating malignancy in the cells of the lining of the uterus called endometrium. In cases, wherein the disease is detected early, treatment is conducted via hysterectomy that involves surgically removing the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. The nearby lymph nodes are also removed during the surgical procedure as a preventive measure against recurrence.

In patients where the disease has reached a more advanced stage, procedures such as radiation and chemotherapy may also be additionally conducted. Once the treatment is over, the patient is called for regular check ups for the next 5 years. Cases of recurrent cancer are usually observed within a span of 3 years of the initial treatment. However, this time around, the cancer would obviously not be in the reproductive system as they have already been taken care of during the surgery. In such cases, the uterine cancerous cells invade the other parts of the body such as abdomen, liver, lungs and even brain. This form of cancer is referred to as metastatic cancer.

The fundamental symptom of recurring endometrial cancer remains the same as in the case of the initial malignancy, that is irregular vaginal bleeding. This could be prevalent either post menopausal or in interim period between two cycles of menstruation. Another symptom that remains identical is pain during intercourse to the extent of bleeding. The rest of the indications of recurrent endometrial cancer could vary in accordance to the place of recurrence in the body. Some of the signs include pain in the back and pelvic region, pain and inflammation in the leg, abdominal pain, chronic cough, weight loss, painful urination or enlargement of lymph nodes. The prognosis of the disease is rather disheartening if the uterine cancer metastasizes to areas outside the pelvic region. In such a stage, treatment can only help by offering respite in the guise of minimized symptoms.
