Many people wonder what causes some into drug and/or alcohol abuse. In fact, it is a good idea that everyone educates themselves about this type of abuse, so that they can help a loved one when the need arises. Also, when a person wants to find out about the causes of drug and/or alcohol abuse, it could be the first step towards giving up the addiction.



All people in the world are born with certain abilities and inabilities. There are people who overcome their inabilities by working hard and there are others who ignore their inabilities and concentrate on just their abilities. There are others still who are unable to handle their inabilities and try and seek solace through drug and/or alcohol abuse. It has been observed the more a person unable a person is, the higher the chances that he/she will resort to use of drug or alcohol. By using drugs and/or alcohol, the person can escape from reality and in the alter-reality, the person feels more capable, with more abilities.

When a child is young, he/she does not have the abilities to look after themselves, and hence, they are dependent completely on their parents for their survival. As the child grows, he/she acquires new skills and this makes the child less dependent on the parents, as now the child has the ability to do things on their own. When a person is unable to cope with challenges in life, be it professional or personal life, he or she will not be able to succeed in life. As a result, the person will try to escape from reality by resorting to the use of drugs or alcohol. Gradually, the person becomes more dependent on drugs or alcohol and cannot function without using it.

However, while there are several situations that can trigger drug or alcohol abuse, it has been observed that the basic causes for drug and/or alcohol abuse ultimately boils down to two causes, namely a way to alleviate pain and to escape from problems. It has also been observed that many people, regardless of age, end up getting addicted to alcohol or drugs after a life altering situation, such as death of a loved one, relationship breakup, accident, psychological trauma, failure in achieving goals, or facing problems professionally. In all these situations, the person is unable to tackle the real problem and come up with a solution. So, the person tries to escape from reality, the pain and disappointment by looking for solace or alternate reality. This is possible by drug and/or alcohol abuse. Under the influence of drugs or alcohol, the world appears a better place and the person feels more in control of his/her life and their surroundings.
